“Scientists discover the world that exists, but engineers create the world that never was.”
– Theodore von Kármán
Every year on 15 September, India observes Engineers’ Day to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sir M. Visvesvaraya, whose work in dams, irrigation and water management left a lasting mark on the country’s development. His legacy reflects a simple truth about engineering: its greatest impact is often measured not by how visible the work is, but by how seamlessly it serves people and keeps working over time.
Great Engineering Fades into the Background
Much of what engineers create eventually becomes part of the everyday. Hot water from a shower on a cold winter morning. A bridge carrying vehicles safely across a river. An industrial plant running three shifts, with systems designed to keep operations safe and reliable. We rarely stop to think about the engineering behind these ordinary moments.
That is perhaps the nature of good engineering. Once a solution works as intended, the calculations, designs, trials and decisions behind it recede from view. What remains is something that simply works – day after day, often for years.
At AM International, this invisible work keeps our businesses running, from agri-nutrients and petrochemicals to infrastructure services and green solutions. Over more than five decades, our engineering teams have built a strong record of achievement across all of them.
That record has also produced leaders. Our companies are widely recognised for developing outstanding engineers and business leaders who now contribute to organisations across India and the world. Many joined us as young engineers and spent their entire careers here. Others retired after decades of distinguished service, or went on to lead in different industries. Both paths reflect the same approach: since our inception, we have created opportunities for professional development and an environment that builds capability, confidence and leadership, not just technical knowledge.
The Engineer’s Brief Is Getting Bigger
The engineer’s brief is evolving at the speed of thought. Our plants give our teams a platform to experiment and bring their ideas to life, and the only test an idea has to pass is its merit. Our engineers are encouraged to share their ideas, and we are just as eager to see them built. Here is how that has played out across the various facets of manufacturing operations across the group.

Operational Excellence
Manali Petrochemicals (MPL) recently expanded the capacity of its Propylene Glycol (PG) plant at Plant-II in Manali, Chennai.
The project drew on MPL’s in-house engineering capabilities and its established hydration process, in which propylene oxide is converted to PG.

Sustainability
SPIC’s comprehensive transformation of its Ammonia Plant to align with evolving sustainability objectives while enhancing operational efficiency.
A key milestone in this journey was the complete transition from naphtha and fuel oil to natural gas as feedstock and fuel.
Supported by process optimisation, renewable energy integration, and water conservation initiatives, this transformation has resulted in a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and improved energy efficiency across operations. A case study of this project, featured in the June 2026 edition of the Indian Journal of Fertilizers, published by the Fertiliser Association of India (FAI), demonstrates how a combination of in-house innovation, strategic engineering investments, and forward-looking decision-making can drive meaningful progress in industrial sustainability.

Safety
Agni Rover, a fire-fighting robot, was developed by an engineering student during his internship as an EMS Electrical Intern at Tuticorin Alkali Chemicals & Fertilizers (TFL). Designed to enhance safety in industrial environments, the rover integrates remote operation, real-time video monitoring, and controlled fire suppression mechanisms.
With this integration, it helps eliminate direct human exposure, enhances situational awareness, and enables rapid and precise responses.

Innovation
At its Tuticorin facility, Greenstar Fertilizers (GFL) built an integrated, multi-grade Water Soluble Fertilizer (WSF) unit. GFL operates two WSF units, a facility with a capacity of 15,000 MT per annum that can produce over 20 grades. Unit I, the first plant, has a daily production capacity of 20 MT and produces 10 grades.
Both these units are managed and run by a team comprising of women engineers only – reflecting our efforts to promote diversity in the industry.

Scalability
PennWhite moved chemical processes developed in the UK into its new manufacturing plant in Oragadam, Chennai, using its unified engineering infrastructure. The plant replicates PennWhite’s proprietary foam-control technologies locally, with high precision, to serve Asian markets.

Talent Development
Sustaining engineering excellence also means nurturing the next generation. Tamilnadu Petroproducts Limited (TPL) partners with Sri Venkateswara College of Engineering (SVCE), a leading institution near Chennai, on a “Semester in Industry” programme.
TPL engineers design the curriculum, deliver coursework and mentor chemical engineering students on-site. We believe partnerships like this lay the foundation for the future of the industry.
AI Widens the Possible, and Raises the Bar for Judgement
The engineer’s toolkit is expanding. With AI, advanced simulation and automation, engineers can analyse more variables, model more scenarios and shorten design cycles considerably.
But better tools produce better solutions only when the engineer in charge has the judgement to know what works and what doesn’t. No engineering challenge has a single perfect answer. Engineers must constantly weigh variables that pull a design in different directions, and that balancing act rests on acumen built from knowledge, experience and observation.

Engineering the Next Chapter
We hope Engineers’ Day 2026 gives every engineer at AM International a moment to reflect on their work, and on the countless invisible decisions behind the things we all take for granted.
To every engineer across our group: we recognise your contribution, and we trust you to keep building better things.
